Course summary
Specialise in advanced propulsion systems to develop the expertise to make an impact in the future of vehicle engineering. Our master’s furthers your automotive engineering knowledge and focuses on propulsion systems to prepare you for working in a dynamic and changing industry. You’ll develop systems-thinking approaches to understand the breadth of challenges faced in the sector such as moral, ethical and sustainability issues. At the start of the course, you’ll be set a topical automotive theme that will feed into group projects, as well as your dissertation. This brings the content of subject-based units to life as well as reflecting professional practice in the industry. It also gives you the benefit of a personalised learning pathway. You’ll explore the impact of a range of applications and technologies, considering their impact, analysing past failures and predicting future challenges and successes. A mix of theory and technical learning throughout the course allows you to use your analytical skills, innovation and creativity. Your group project and dissertation will also be aligned to the UN’s sustainable development goals so that your learning experience is relevant to the ongoing developments and future of the sector. To help prepare you to work in an increasingly digital-based industry, you’ll develop specialist skills in modelling, testing and product development. And you’ll learn how simulation and testing go hand-in-hand to enable rapid product development cycles that help us on our way to achieving zero impact mobility. Learn from experts in the field You’ll learn from academics active in researching the latest in automotive engineering. They are dedicated to transferring this research knowledge to your learning experience so you get the benefit of their expertise. We also have good links with industry around the world, and invite guest speakers to share their knowledge and experience with you. Use specialist facilities Throughout the course, you'll attend laboratory sessions run on our bespoke facilities that demonstrate the principles of current and future vehicles. To support your research project activities, you'll be able to draw on the staff and facilities of our new Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS). Start your future here Our students go on to work in engineering and specialist technical roles in the automotive industry. They are likely to work in roles that use skills in product design, development and innovation. These can be found at vehicle manufacturers, tier 1 suppliers, SMEs and consultancies. Our past graduates have secured jobs as:
- Calibration engineer, Ford Motor Company Ltd
- Product engineer, Renault
- Engineering consultant, D'Appolonia
