Course summary
Computer animation is arguably the most successful application of digital technology in the creative sector. It provides an exciting, flexible medium for creating incredible films. It has revolutionised the world of special effects and is integral to the billion-dollar computer game industry. Interest in careers in 3D Modelling and Animation (especially as they apply to games) is high. The qualifications provide a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in their sector and their national recognition by employers allows direct progression to employment. This course is designed to present opportunities to students to work with a range of techniques and technologies, producing work for a variety of clients and platforms. This approach allows students to experiment in several diverse sectors of the creative industries and informs crucial individual decisions regarding further training, education or employment. Students will develop an array of academic, practical and interpersonal skills and undertake a substantial work placement project in an aspect of the industry of their choice, and as a result of this and other industry related tasks, they will come into contact with and work with local employers. This course follows the Pearson HND/HNC Diploma in Creative Media Production (Visual Effects) (RQF) (which will be the title of the final award given to students on this course).
Modules
Year 1 - Mandatory Core Units: Individual Project (Pearson-set); Creative Media Industry; Professional Practice. Specialist Units: Visual Effects & Motion Graphics Culture; Visual Effects Practices; 3D Modelling. Optional: Light and Sound; Principles of Animation. Year 2 - Mandatory: Collaborative Project (Pearson-set); Personal Professional Development. Specialist: Advanced Visual Effects Studies. Optional: Advanced Rendering & Visualisation; Advanced Animation; Advanced 3D Modelling; Narrative.
Assessment method
The course is predominantly assessed through the completion of assignment projects. Much of the study will require work outside of formal classes, so self-motivation and good time management skills are essential. As a guideline you are advised that a 15-credit unit approximates to a learning time of 150 hours.

Applicants should normally be at least 18 years of age. Applications are welcomed from candidates with a subject-specific Level 3 course such as a National Subsidiary/Diploma/Extended Diploma, A Level, Access to Higher Education Course, or a work-based course, such as NVQ 3 or Advanced Apprenticeship with a minimum 48 UCAS points achieved. Mature students may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include extensive work experience (paid and/or unpaid) and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in their work sector.
