Course summary

The Motorcycle Engineering MSc at UWTSD Swansea is a dynamic programme designed for those who are passionate about the design and development of motorcycles. Since its start in 2003, this course has evolved to reflect the growing demand in the motorcycle industry, covering both the exciting motorcycle racing world and the mainstream road riding sector. This master’s degree offers students the chance to gain hands-on and theoretical knowledge essential for creating high-performance motorcycles and other advanced models. Combining a solid academic foundation with industry-focused practical experience, the course is a blend of practical and theoretical components tailored to fit different career paths in motorcycle engineering. Students will engage in a wide array of motorcycle engineering projects and modules that cover core areas such as motorcycle dynamics, engineering and manufacturing training, and the finer points of motorcycle design. In addition to the formal classes, students work on motorcycle-specific assignments and projects, gaining direct, valuable experience and deeper insight into the complexities of this field. Each student also has the flexibility to focus on areas of personal interest, whether that’s competitive motorcycle racing design or cutting-edge road-riding technologies. This balance of guided study and personalised exploration ensures graduates are well-equipped to succeed in a career in motorcycle engineering, with skills valued by employers in various sectors of the industry. By the end of this programme, students will have developed both a technical and creative understanding of motorcycle engineering, ready to contribute to the industry with a clear grasp of essential skills. Whether aiming to innovate in performance design or focusing on road-ready motorcycles, students graduate with a solid grounding in the expertise in motorcycle engineering required to thrive in this fast-paced industry.

Modules

In this intensive one-year programme, students gain in-depth skills across modules such as Motorcycle Dynamics and Data Acquisition, Motorcycle Race Engineering and Simulation, Structural Component Analysis, and Aerodynamics of Ground Vehicles. Practical applications of energy storage, alternative fuels, and non-destructive testing are also covered, culminating in a final Master’s Project to apply learned expertise directly to the industry. Aerodynamics of Ground Vehicles (10 credits) Alternative Fuels and Combustion Modelling (20 credits) Automotive Sector Management and Business (10 credits) Energy Storage and Control Systems (20 credits) Materials and Life Cycle Analysis (10 credits) Motorcycle Dynamics and Data Acquisition (10 credits) Motorcycle Race Engineering and Simulation (10 credits) Non-Destructive Testing (10 credits) Structural Component Analysis (10 credits) Research Methods (10 credits) Master's Project (60 credits)

Assessment method

Assessment is undertaken in a wide range of formats from the traditional examination and coursework, to more ‘industrial’ based assessment methods such as track-side field work, workshop based tasks, computer software based assessments and oral examinations and group seminars.
