Course summary
The BA (Hons) Childhood Studies Degree is aimed at those who intend to work, in the field of childhood and youth services or education, or for those who work within these fields who would benefit from more classroom teaching than the Foundation Degrees. It is aimed at people who are passionate about children and young people, enjoy working in settings where they are and are person-centred. The degree enables students to work in a placement in a relevant setting and combines academic knowledge and practical experience, to enable students to support children and young people. A range of themes are covered and delivered by highly experienced tutors. This allows students to acquire knowledge and develop skills in areas and disciplines such as: child development, safeguarding, leadership and management, and education. The placement allows students to gain valuable work experience. Working in the sector offers an opportunity to make a positive impact on both individuals and the wider community. Most students choose this option to enhance their career opportunities further. Previous graduates have progressed to careers in management, SENDCo roles, pastoral work in educational settings, social care and community work, family outreach services and youth justice work. Many students progress to further professional qualifications to pursue careers in teaching (Primary, Secondary, or Further Education in Colleges) or social work. Modules
Students will complete the following modules: Level 4: Year One Holistic Child Social Policy, Effective Teamwork, The Reflective Student, Professional Practice, Curriculum Studies. Level 5: Year Two Leadership and Management, Safeguarding, Speaking and Listening, The Critically Reflective Student, Supporting Children's Wellbeing, Research Theory and Practice. Level 6: Year Three Multiagency and multi-professional Practices with Children, Global Perspectives on Childhood, Dissertation, Current Issues. Elective: Children, Young People, Families and Crime Elective or Pedagogic Practice.
Assessment method
A range of assessment methods are used from reports and essays to presentations and portfolios. Typically each unit has two forms of assessment attached to it. Assessments have been carefully designed to support and develop your skills in independent thinking and learning.Upon successful completion of the course you will receive BA (Hons) Childhood Studies awarded by Sheffield Hallam University.
