Course summary

The BA (Hons) Childhood Studies Degree is aimed at those who intend to work, in the field of childhood and youth services or education, or for those who work within these fields who would benefit from more classroom teaching than the Foundation Degrees. It is aimed at people who are passionate about children and young people, enjoy working in settings where they are and are person-centred. The degree enables students to work in a placement in a relevant setting and combines academic knowledge and practical experience, to enable students to support children and young people. A range of themes are covered and delivered by highly experienced tutors. This allows students to acquire knowledge and develop skills in areas and disciplines such as: child development, safeguarding, leadership and management, and education. The placement allows students to gain valuable work experience. Working in the sector offers an opportunity to make a positive impact on both individuals and the wider community. Most students choose this option to enhance their career opportunities further. Previous graduates have progressed to careers in management, SENDCo roles, pastoral work in educational settings, social care and community work, family outreach services and youth justice work. Many students progress to further professional qualifications to pursue careers in teaching (Primary, Secondary, or Further Education in Colleges) or social work.
