The MRes in Applied Analytical Sciences (LCMS) is a unique combination of industry participation and course content that will provide you with a vocationally-relevant qualification and help make you highly employable both in the UK and abroad. Global demand for mass spectrometry and chromatography has grown at an unprecedented rate, with qualified graduates in short supply and highly sought after. Your course is designed for the needs of industry and will cover topics such as fundamentals of mass spectrometry and separation science, valid analytical measurement, statistics, data analysis and method development. Swansea is the only UK institution to offer a scheme solely dedicated to these topics, drawing upon expertise in the Institute of Mass Spectrometry (IMS), based in the Medical School. Modules
Modules may include: Mass spectrometry – basics and fundamentals; Separation science and sample handling; Data analysis for Health and Medical Sciences.
Assessment method
Assessment for taught modules will include examinations, case studies, essays, problem sheets and database searching results. The MRes project will be assessed through a written thesis supplemented by a viva. For students enrolled on the MRes the completion of all taught modules only (60 credits) will result in the award of Higher Education PG Certificate for students who exit at this point. This certificate exit qualification is different to the programme “PG Certificate in Applied LCMS”.
Entry requirements
Candidates should normally have a minimum of a 2.1 degree in a relevant science subject. Applications will include two references from academics in the field of interest to confirm practical and academic ability. English language requirement: IELTS overall 6.5 or Swansea University recognised equivalent.
