Course summary

Explore all aspects of the nervous system, from the molecular to the behavioural. On your three-year Neuroscience degree you will discover the processes behind neurological disorders and study the wider aspects of physiology, pharmacology and the immune system. You will gain an understanding that the human nervous system is one of science’s greatest challenges, with the prevention of neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease, and of mental illnesses being a priority for society. Neuroscientists are needed to address these challenges. You will also have the opportunity to spend a year in the pharmaceutical industry between years two and three. And, an opportunity to spend a semester at a partner university during year two. This course will also lead to a range of careers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology industries, research and clinical science.

Modules

Typical modules include: Year 1: Chemistry of life, Fundamentals of Biochemistry Fundamentals of Cell Biology and Physiology, How to Think Like a Scientist, The Human Genome and Disease. Year2: Immunology, Infection and Inflammation, Pharmacology, Vertebrate Development, Bioinformatics, Cell Biology. The learning activities for this course include the following: lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, individual and group, projects and independent learning (studying on your own). We’ll assess you using: coursework, laboratory reports and essays, individual and group projects, oral presentations, portfolios, written and practical exams
