Course summary
The course is for Mental Health Professionals seeking to qualify and practice as AMHPs. The course is open to social workers, community psychiatric nurses, Occupational Therapists and Psychologists. The course aims to equip trainees seeking approval under the Mental Health Act 1983 with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake formal Mental Health Act Assessments. Achievement of required competencies is a key focus of the course. The programme is divided between in-class lectures and practical placement under the supervision of a qualified and experienced AMHP.
- Managing mental health assessments, including simulated practice, placement experience.
- Familiarisation with key legislation and Code of Practice.
- Awareness of current issues and case law affecting mental health act assessments.
- Knowledge of other associated areas such as social perspectives, the roles of other professionals.
- Reflective discussions, particularly including work with service users and carers who have been subject to formal mental health assessments and detention.

Entry requirements
Relevant professional qualification. Completion of an appropriate post-qualifying course (the university Pre-AMHP course is suitable and recommended for this purpose). Submission of a satisfactory reflective account of 5 hours of observations on an inpatient psychiatric ward. Successful interview at panel. Post qualifying practice experience is required. Employment on either full or part time basis in a statutory mental health setting is required, together with financial and personal support from the employer authority.
