Course summary

This course is ideal for anyone who works supporting children in social, family, voluntary, charitable or youth services. It focuses on the skills and underpinning knowledge required in the children and families’ workforce. The topics are relevant to the implementation of governmental legislation, policies and strategies, including learning and social development, communication skills, team working strategies, interventions and health and welfare issues in the field of children’s services It will expand the understandings you have developed through your practice and previous experiences and develop academic skills that enable you to carry out your role more effectively.

Modules

Year 1 Core modules (students are required to take): • Values and Roles of a Principled Professional • Theories of Learning and Development • Power, Inclusion and Diversity of Need Students are required to choose one option module from: • Healthy Teams Supporting Healthy Children, Families and Communities • Creating an Ideal Play Environment • Higher Level Teaching Assistant Preparation Level 4 Year 2 Core modules (students are required to take): • Safeguarding and Promoting Wellbeing • Reflecting on Research Informed Practice Students are required to choose one option module from: • Specialist Co-ordinator Roles • Behaviour and Learning in an Interconnected World Students are required to choose one option module from: • Risks, Rights and Social Justice in a Sustainable Society • Play and Early Learning • Higher Level Teaching Assistant Preparation Level 5

Assessment is through a mixture of reports, essays, presentations etc.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

You must have a Level 2 Literacy qualification e.g. GCSE English Language Grade C (grade 4); Functional Skills Level 2 (previously Key Skills Communication Level 2); Adult Literacy Level 2. You must have a Level 3 qualification e.g. A level, BTEC National, T Level or NVQ Level 3. You must also have employer support and at least one year's volunteering/working experience. Previous relevant work experience and learning may be accredited and assessed as part of the application process.
