This vocational course develops a range of practical and knowledge based skills related to the animal management industry. The content of the programme has been specifically designed to be appropriate to the needs of the animal management industry. There is a strong emphasis on applying theoretical knowledge to practical situations using our excellent animal facilities. What will I Study? Year 1: Units introduce the student to farm health & behaviour, anatomy & physiology, animal nutrition, animal health, and how this relates to behaviour and management in relation to welfare. Year 2: Subjects develop on the first year becoming more applied, including Welfare and Legislation, Integrated Health Management, Laboratory & Veterinary Diagnostics Techniques, Wildlife Care and Rehabilitation Management. Learning and Teaching Approach This programme is delivered with a variety of learning and teaching approaches to include all students’ learning styles and preferences. For all modules, theory lectures are delivered that aim to deliver the core content and provide the underpinning knowledge. To complement the theory lectures, students have group seminars/practical sessions that are used to reinforce concepts delivered theoretically. The teaching methods focus on facilitating a student centred approach to enhance the independent learning that takes place outside of the classroom. Teaching will take place on the Bishop Burton campus. What is the contact time? Approximately 16 hours a week to include lectures, seminars, work experience, practical's and tutorials. Students are also expected to carry out a significant amount of private study (approx. 25-30 hours a week) in addition to contact time. Part-time is also available. Students can expect to receive their timetables during induction week. What else can I expect?
- Animal Management Unit housing a wide range of species including meerkats, racoon dogs, primates, alpacas, marsupials, invertebrates, tropical and marine fish, reptiles, rodents and a nocturnal house.
- Dedicated dog training area, commercial dog kennels and grooming facilities, commercial sheep and beef enterprises, equine yard and schools.
- Additional facilities include Science Centre, IT suites, dedicated University Centre, study spaces and social areas, and modern Learning Resources Centre.
- Online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) used to enhance and facilitate teaching and independent learning on all programmes.

Assessment method
Assessment includes practical reports and demonstrations, written assignments, portfolios, scientific posters and group or individual presentations. There are no formal examinations. Opportunities for feedback on assessments is available prior to the final submission to support student development and achievement. Staff aim to return assessed work within a 15 working day timeframe (not including holidays) in order that students can most benefit from the feedback.

GCSE English at grade C or equivalent
English language requirements

Additional fee information
Students are required to have a kennel coat or overalls in blue and a white lab coat, which are available from our online shop. Steel toe-capped footwear is also required. We anticipate this will cost approximately £100. An SPSS licence may be beneficial and can be purchased from our online shop. There may also be additional costs for educational visits/trips and enrichment activities. On successful completion of the programme, students have the opportunity to graduate at a ceremony wearing formal dress. The hire of the formal dress is an additional cost.
