Students who take English and Classical Civilisation at Lampeter UWTSD get the following benefits: 1. With English, choose from a range of focused areas from Anglo Saxon Heroic literature to Victorian narrative poetry; the bloody revenge dramas of the Renaissance to contemporary bestsellers; from the realist novels of the 19th century to contemporary poetry and postmodern novels. 2. With Classical Civilisation, we provide the opportunity to study a wide array of topics and themes. You can focus your attention on mythology and religion, literature and art, or social, political and economic history as suits your tastes. 3. All students taught in small interactive groups, in a friendly and supportive environment. 4. Students have the opportunity to go on fieldtrips to places like Rome and Athens. 5. Staff have teaching and research expertise in a wide array of areas from the poetry of Ovid and Statius to the study of ancient warfare, economics, iconography, and Romano-Celtic religious practices.
The Classical Civilisation side of the scheme allows you to study a wide range of modules covering not only fascinating historical figures like the Athenian statesmen Pericles, well-known military leaders like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, as well as historical "boogy-men" like the Emperor Nero – but also the great literary output of these worlds – the Homeric epics, the tragedies, Cicero – as well as basic aspects of everyday life, such as the role of women, religion, warfare and the economy. With the English side of the programme you will foster and develop analytic reading and clear structured writing skills, also develop your independent and cooperative working abilities: abilities essential for any modern workplace with its demand for the analysis of information and the writing of complex reports.
A wide range of assessment methods are utilised. In addition to traditional gobbet work, essays and in class tests, you will be assessed through bibliographic exercises, presentations – oral and PowerPoint based, at both individual and group level – creation of abstracts, reflective reports, in-house conference papers, article reviews, take-home exams, group wikis, creation of project plans and, of course, the dissertation. This variety of assessment helps develop skills in presenting material in a clear, professional and lucid manner, whether orally or in writing. Optional modules also offer creative or practice-based assessment (e.g. archiving, exhibition).
