Course summary

Applied Microbiology is a laboratory-based science which closely studies and analyses the microorganisms that impact on the health of human beings, animals and plant life. One of only a few degrees in the country of its type and designed in consultation with local and regional employers in response to the changing needs of the industry, this degree provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of the fascinating world of bacteria and viruses, paying attention to microbes of medical importance. This degree is a clear avenue of entry to a range of career paths with the potential to progress into a range of fields, from biotechnology and medical research to bioterrorism and climate change.

Modules

Year 1: Principles of Microbiology, Basic Biochemistry, Data Analysis, Biology of Disease, Microbiological Laboratory Techniques, Parasitology. Year 2: Food and Industrial Microbiology, Microbial Physiology, Microbial Genetics, Medical Microbiology, Work-based Learning, Project.

Assessment method

Assessment is employed throughout the duration of the course through both formative and summative assessment including presentations, case studies, essay plans, question and answer sessions. You will also be assessed through essays, exams, laboratory assignments and portfolios of work.
