This course allows you to jointly study Sociology and Drama, giving you a fully rounded experience of both subjects. BGU’s sociology programme provides a comprehensive and exciting introduction to the study of all aspects of the social world. The course takes you on a journey from the 19th-century foundations of the discipline through to the social, cultural and political changes that are reshaping our globalising world. Along the way, you’ll see how sociological thinking is crucial for people who want to understand the world around them, whether as students, tuition-fee payers, citizens, employees (or via any of their other social roles). Drama at BGU is a forward-looking programme that looks beyond historic and established conventions by exploring what drama can be now and in the future. The programme is grounded in the academic elements of drama as well as practical performance making. There is no one-size-fits-all method of teaching at BGU – we shape our methods to suit each subject and each group, combining the best aspects of traditional university teaching with innovative techniques to promote student participation and interactivity. You will be taught in a variety of ways, from lectures, tutorials and seminars, to practical workshops, coursework and work-based placements. Small group seminars and workshops will provide you with an opportunity to review issues raised in lectures, and you will be expected to carry out independent study. Placements are a key part of degree study at BGU. They provide an enriching learning experience for you to apply the skills and knowledge you will gain from your course and, in doing so, give valuable real-world experience to boost your career. We recognise that individuals come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, so we use a variety of assessment strategies on our courses. In Sociology, we see assessment as a powerful driver of student learning and a means for demonstrating what students have learnt. These assessment methods include coursework, small group work, report writing, oral presentations, multi-modal presentations (posters, videos, print), examinations and individual dissertation projects. Where appropriate, assessment tasks are designed to mimic the type of challenges faced by employees in graduate-level jobs. We use a versatile range of assessments in Drama which reflect both the equal emphasis we place on theory and practice, and the importance we give to the future employment skills of our graduates. Theory-based assessment methods include analytical reports, student-led seminars, presentations, essays, dissertations, exhibitions of work and portfolios. More practical assessment methods may include analysed performances, group presentations, practical performances or large scale individual community placements. The wide range of graduate-level opportunities and positions available to BGU Sociology graduates include Activism and campaigning, Advertising, Arts, Bankers (e.g. investment bankers, analysts), Charity administrators, Community and youth workers, Curators, Entrepreneurs, Film makers, Financial analysts, Journalists, Lawyers, Lecturers, Marketing, Police officers, Public relations (PR), Researchers, School and college teachers and Social workers. Combining your study with Drama opens up a variety of other career possibilities. Throughout our drama courses you will acquire a number of useful skills which can be transferred to the workplace, such as good communication skills, the ability to work effectively in groups and as an individual, good organisational and decisionmaking skills, effective analytical skills, and the ability to apply theory to practice. If you’ve recently completed or studied modules as part of a previous qualification, you may be eligible to apply for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL). Entry to all years except Year 1 will require APL. Once you have submitted an application for the programme, you will need to complete the relevant paperwork for APL as well.
