Course summary

This course will equip you with the knowledge, skills and expertise required for working in the educational sector with children at a primary level, and associated professionals. This course is suitable if you are currently working as a primary teaching assistant or in other educational settings, and wish to work towards a professional qualification. The course will provide you with a formal qualification specifically designed for support staff working within primary educational settings or those interested in developing a route into primary teaching. Studying this course part-time will offer you the perfect balance between work and study, and will allow to arrange any other commitments you may have comfortably around your studies. On successful completion of this course you will have enhanced your knowledge of education to help develop your career or move into a teaching-related role. You can also progress onto a third year top up degree, delivered at the University of Bedfordshire, to achieve an Applied Education Studies BA (Hons) Degree. With further study you can also enter teacher training and gain Qualified Teacher Status. You will also need to undertake a paid or voluntary placement in a relevant setting in a school environment (minimum two days per week) for the duration of your course. You should ideally arrange your own placement but the course team will also be able to assist you in this.

Assessment method

All units are assessed by a variety of methods including written assignments, presentations, short timed examinations and reflective logs. You will develop the skills of reflective practice and the writing of a reflective journal, and commitment to personal and professional development is a requirement of this Foundation Degree.

Qualification requirements

To join this course you will need: 32-48 UCAS points from a Level 3 course (e.g. A Level, Level 3 Diploma, BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma or equivalent) English GCSE at grade 4 / grade C or above OR Level 2 equivalent Maths GCSE at grade 4 / grade C or above OR Level 2 equivalent is desirable We welcome applicants who may not meet the above entry requirements but have relevant work experience within the industry You may be asked to attend an interview to discuss the requirements of the course. You will also need to undertake a paid or voluntary placement in a relevant setting in a school environment (minimum two days per week) for the duration of your course.
