Course summary
This course provides practising midwives and other healthcare professionals with the opportunity to explore and analyse the latest developments in midwifery knowledge and practice. You will be encouraged to evaluate your own clinical practice, as well as to clinically appraise wider issues relevant to women and families in society.
Modules
Modules include: Examination of the new-born; critical care for childbirth; normal childbirth; preparation for mentorship (via e-learning); perinatal mental health; women’s health: from a local to a global perspective; pregnancy aquatics, nutrition and health; research methods; evidence based practice for patient care; leading and managing in healthcare organisations; leading change for patient and/or service improvement; project management and methods of inquiry for healthcare practice; work-based learning for healthcare practice; the ‘me’ in leadership for health and social care practice; dissertation.
Assessment method
Assessment methods include, depending on the module undertaken, and include: Practical assessments; portfolios; written assignments; seminar presentations; viva voce.
Entry requirements
You should be a qualified midwife with a Bachelor’s degree with honours from a UK University or an equivalent academic or professional qualification for international students. Please note that this course does not confer qualification as a midwife and applicants who apply for modules with a practice element must be in employment in a maternity setting. For those without a placement, following discussion with module leads may be assessed in a simulated setting in the University. Teaching will reflect upon previous clinical experience for both UK and international students. This course is suitable for qualified midwives from any field of practice who are looking to enhance their personal, professional and academic development in order to underpin existing practice; and to push the boundaries to influence future midwifery practice, education, research in the UK or internationally.
