Course summary

The course is designed to support industry by providing highly skilled and motivated individuals that have the opportunity to progress into a broad range of engineering careers. Delivered at our modern campus at Corby, our resources include advanced engineering workshops, for both electronic and mechanical engineering, fully equipped computer suites for 3D modelling activities and 3D Printers which are suitable for a variety of applications from prototypes to customized tools. Tresham College provides you with training that meets the current needs of the engineering sector. We have strong and well-established links with many companies, and our tutors have a vast wealth of experience in the Electronic and Manufacturing Engineering sector. After successful completion of the HNC, you can apply to progress on to the HND. Upon completion of the HND, you may wish to complete a top-up year to convert these qualifications into a full BSc Degree in Engineering at Bedford College or other universities.

Modules

During this course you will study mandatory units in engineering design, engineering maths, engineering science and managing a project. A further four optional units will also be studied, which due to the flexible nature of this course, can be selected to meet the needs of students and employers; units may include robotics and programmable logic controllers, thermodynamics, mechatronics, materials properties and testing and mechanical principles.

Assessment method

The course is assessed in a number of ways to ensure it challenges you to develop your skill set across various platforms. Methods include reports, assignments, presentations, application of theory, scenario based discussions and papers and case studies. You will also be assessed by the submission of project work, which can be based on your current job role, enabling you to apply theory to your current working environment.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

Mechanical Engineering BTEC Level 3 Diploma (or equivalent) at Pass or above, including advanced maths* OR A Level 3 vocational related qualification which includes Further maths* OR A-Levels in maths and/or Science OR Substantial relevant industrial, or military, experience and Further maths*. Where formal maths qualifications cannot be provided, applicants can take an internal maths assessment, and a pass grade can be used for entry requirement purposes.

Please note that all students who wish to apply for this course who are non-native English speakers, or have not studied the final two years of school/college in English, must demonstrate capability in English to a standard commensurate to: -IELTS 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 being awarded on individual sections -PTE Academic score of 42 to 49.
