Course summary
This unique BSc Psychology and Counselling single honours programme provides students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of theoretical issues and practical skills within the disciplines of both Psychology and Counselling. This programme provides students with the opportunity to pursue a BPS accredited degree combining the two popular subject areas of Counselling and Psychology. The programme is designed to develop a strong set of critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills, in addition to basic helping and counselling skills, considered desirable by many employers and postgraduate courses.
Course details
Modules
Students must complete 120 credits in each academic year, made up of a number of distinct modules, in order to achieve the 360 credits needed for an honours degree award. The programme includes 80 credits of compulsory psychology modules at level four and five (shared with our BPS accredited BSc Honours Psychology programme) alongside 40 credits of counselling theory and skills-based modules at both levels. Year one modules include Introduction to Counselling Skills; Developmental and Social Psychology; Cognition and Emotion; History of Counselling; and Research Methods. Year two modules include Counselling Skills and Approaches; Social Psychology; Individual Differences Across the Lifespan; Brain, Biology and Cognition; and Research Methods II. At Level Six, alongside the 40 credit compulsory Psychology Empirical Project and the compulsory 20 credit Reflexive Counselling Skills module students can choose from a number of optional modules in psychology and counselling.
Assessment method
Assessment is carried out through a variety of assessment methods including skills-based assessments, case studies, written essays, presentations, examinations, portfolios, practical in-class assessments, and a dissertation thesis. The assessments are carefully designed to allow students to display their knowledge and ability on each of the topic areas studied.
