Course summary

This degree builds on the industry-recognised HNC/D programmes. All first year entrants will start on the HNC and the entry requirements are therefore for this programme. Successful completion will allow you to progress to the second year of the HND. Following achievement of the HND, you can progress to the third year of the degree. Applicants already holding a relevant HNC qualification can apply for direct entry to the second year. When completing your application make sure you choose year two. Applicants already holding a relevant HND qualification can apply for direct entry to year three, again where this is the case please make sure you choose year three when completing your application. The BA (Hons) Visual Communication and Design is an interdisciplinary design course. It is a highly student-centred course in which you will be encouraged to explore and develop your individual style and interests as a creative practitioner. Working on projects with social, economic and environmental significance, you will develop a clear understanding of contemporary design theory and practice. This course focuses on 21st century skills development. It aims to enhance your existing visual communication skill-set through participation in a range of live project briefs and self-directed practice. With the opportunity to work alongside respected industry professionals, you will be supported through the cultivation and development of your own professional profile and portfolio.

Entry requirements for advanced entry (i.e. into Year 2 and beyond)

Advanced Entry to year two (HND) may be possible if you have completed the HNC Visual Communication, with a B or above in the Graded Unit. Advanced Entry to year three may be possible if you have completed the HND Visual Communication, with a B or above in the Graded Unit.

Additional fee information

This is a Top-Up Degree whereby Year 1 of the course comprises an HNC and in some cases Year 2 an HND. Courses which comprise an HN award as their first and/or second year will be charged the Higher National fee for the first and/or second year, increasing to the degree fee rate after this. Please see the course page for specific fees details. RUK students will be charged the RUK HN fee for the Higher National portion of the programme and the degree portion will be charge at the RUK degree fee, the fourth year of consecutive study on the programme is free. EU/EEA and Swiss nationals starting their study in Scotland from academic year 2021-22, who do not have settled status, will be considered as international for fee purposes. For 2021-22, the university offered an automatic scholarship for the degree (3rd) year and the 4th year of study free for those studying full-time, on continuous study.
