Sport Science: Strength and Conditioning

Course summary

As sport participation rates are forecast to increase over the coming years, the study of sports science and specifically strength and conditioning is becoming more and more important. Now is the perfect time to complete this Foundation Degree with us and develop the skills that will help you enjoy a rewarding career in the industry. Focusing on the three main disciplines of sport science – Physiology, Biomechanics and Psychology – as identified by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES), you’ll look at the principles of training, exploring how sports performance is affected by these factors in both theoretical and practical tests. The programme benefits from state-of-the-art sports laboratory, strength and conditioning and sports coaching suites, equipment and facilities, including:

  • Sports laboratory catering for physiological analysis including Cortex Metalyzer Gas Analysis, Douglas Bag Gas Analysis, Blood Lactate, Cholesterol and Glucose measurement and Wattbike Cycle Ergometer
  • Fully equipped strength and conditioning suite with Olympic lifting equipment and video technology as well as resistance and cardio-vascular equipment
  • Sports hall catering for a plethora of sports such as football, basketball, and badminton with stadium seating and video analysis equipment
  • Performance analysis suite for conducting match analysis
  • Outdoor playing fields and astro turf
Along with studying the biochemistry of sport and exercise, you’ll also learn about the theory behind applied strength and conditioning techniques including biomechanics, and complete practical assignments to understand this subject in more detail inline with the UK Strength and Conditioning Association occupational standards. Each topic will prepare you with the knowledge and skills to succeed in a sports science related role. This course is validated by Manchester Metropolitan University.

Qualification requirements

2 A levels (an A level in PE would be an advantage), or a BTEC Level 3 in a related area. Applicants are welcome with vocational qualifications such as the Certificate / Diploma in Personal Training alongside relevant work experience. We strongly recommend that all applicants have GCSE English Language and Mathematics grades A*-C or level 9-4. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) will be accepted in line with the University policy and procedures. Applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria but have previous learning towards a degree-level qualification or relevant industry or life experience will be considered on an individual basis and may be invited to interview.
