Film and Television at Trafford & Stockport College Group - UCAS

Course summary

This course begins at Level 4 and is a natural progression route for students that have previously studied creative media, but students can successfully study this course without prior knowledge of the subject. An eagerness and passion to learn, examine and experiment in the world of moving image with an aim to work in the industry is what we desire. It has been created to provide you with a strong foundation of the necessary disciplines, skills and techniques to work in the TV and Film industry in the first year. In the second year, we work to specialise and film for and alongside industry clients. Unlike broad based media production courses, this degree focuses on these specific sectors to allow you to refine your study ready for targeted employment opportunities. On consultation with industry at Netflix, MediaCityUK and Dock 10, much of the course content focuses on equipping you to enter the most popular areas such as Drama, Documentary, Multi-Camera Production (Game shows and Talent), Content Creation, Live Broadcasting and Corporate Marketing. Importantly, the degree is also preparing for the future and will be engaging in some immersive and interactive projects as technology and broadcasting capabilities evolve. The competitive field of film and television often requires multi-skilled freelance practitioners that can produce content from initial inception to the final exhibition. Students will be encouraged to plan, script, budget, produce and direct within a range of genres and projects. Students will be taught on-site with privy to professional grade filming kit, edit suites, a fully equipped TV studio and gallery but also will shoot on location and in a variety of settings akin to industry projects. Whilst contemporary practices will be dominate, students will also be taught how to shoot on 35mm film to build their creativity and breadth of film knowledge. Using experienced industry and expert educational staff, we aim to teach our graduates to not only have the technical skills but also competent business knowledge, an ability to self-promote, liaise with clients and build the resilience to work in this ever-changing industry. On this Higher National Certificate, you will study 4 units. The primary focus is on practical application and execution, but this will be grounded in theoretical understanding. Student completing the HNC may progress to the L5 HND in a second year. This may then lead to a Level 6 top up degree programme in a related course or directly entering employment. The development and growth of the TV and Film sector in Media CityUK in Salford, as well as content made in Stockport and Manchester, has resulted in an increase in job opportunities in many disciplines. Graduates can enter production roles in a whole host of local companies such as the BBC, ITV, Dock 10, Toasted, RED productions and Lime, as well as national and international opportunities with the BFI, Netflix, Disney, Comcast and Amazon to name just a few. Graduates will also have the skills to operate as freelance practitioners in their chosen fields and book an array of continuous jobs in the corporate sector.
