Course summary

The shift to digital media has created profound changes in the ways we understand the world around us. This degree will ask you to think about the ways in which digital cultures have changed the way we live and work, how we relate to the environment and to each other, how digital platforms have transformed how audiences now produce and consume film, television, and other media. Alongside, textual and historical approaches to screen media, you will develop media production skills, preparing you for the widespread use of audio-visual communication in contemporary workplaces and industries. This programme offers you the chance to become a knowledgeable and independent student of screen media and their related industries. You will have the opportunity to: • Combine film with the study of contemporary television programmes and digital media • Think about the profound changes online life is bringing to our lives • Examine their social, historical and cultural contexts and related theoretical ideas • Enjoy cutting edge research from leading specialists on modules that include: o Contexts and Histories o Culture and Identity o Practices and Provocations • Explore a diverse collection of films in the University libraries to support your study

Assessment method

The learning and assessment activities for this course include the following: The programme is progressively structured to develop transferable skills and those of research (information retrieval), formal writing and presentation. It also inludes, practical forms of assessment such as video essays and data visualisation that involve the processes of planning, producing, reviewing and revising individually, or as part of a group, to simulate workplace and industrial activity.

Qualification requirements

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard. The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
