Course summary
This programme is aimed at those wishing to work in a social care context with children, young people and their families, to achieve positive and sustainable change in their lives. As part of the course you will become skilled in recognising and assessing the complex needs of children, young people and families often present and be able to support with any specific interventions or referrals. The need for respectful curiosity that challenges and supports children, young people and families to achieve their potential and stay safe, will become evident through your studies. During the programme you will develop an understanding of the importance of early intervention and safeguarding work, allowing you to manage risk across the spectrum need for children, young people and families.
Modules
Each module is worth a specified number of credits, enabling you to cover key subject knowledge while developing your own interests. For full time students a total of 120 credits will be studied in each academic year. In the majority of cases this will consist of 6 modules. For part time students it will depend on the intensity of your studies. Year One: Professional Practice - 20 credits Safeguarding Children and Young People - 20 credits Multi-agency Working - 20 credits Equality, Rights, Diversity and Cultural Differences - 20 credits Lifespan Development - 20 credits Assessment and Intervention - 20 credits Year Two: Research Methods - 20 credits Professional Investigation - 20 credits Social Pedagogy - 20 credits Social Policy and Practice - 20 credits Supporting Social and Emotional Wellbeing - 20 credits Professional and Personal Development - 20 credits
Assessment method
There are two formal or summative assessed pieces of work for each module. Assessment methods include a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and projects. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark. In addition to formal assessments throughout modules of study there will be developmental (formative) assessments to support you with developing greater understanding of your progress. The balance of assessment by coursework and practical varies between modules. The approximate percentage of the course assessed by coursework is as follows: Year 1: 92% coursework, 8% practical Year 2: 92% coursework, 8% practical
