Our four year MEng Biomedical Engineering course is delivered in a way that is unique to Aston. You will complete years one to three alongside the BEng students. Fourth year modules are uniquely delivered via distance learning, allowing you to undertake them whilst on an internship, work placement or in employment in the biomedical engineering industry, applying what you have learnt to your real-life work. The course is designed to provide an academic and practical understanding of engineering systems and applications in the medical field. You will develop a deep understanding of the human physiology and the biological functions of the body. Specific emphasis is put on engineering knowledge and practical skills. In addition, you will gain a masters degree and have completed relevant work experience within 4 years (rather than the traditional 5) and have the potential to be employed after the end of your third year. As a Biomedical Engineer, you will be entering the profession at a time of exciting change and innovation. Biomedical Engineers have the skills and flexibility to be involved in a wide number of activities from the development of novel devices to the delivery of expert services directly to patients. Biomedical engineers can have varied careers in many environments, including hospitals, private and public research facilities, medical institutions, universities and government agencies. - We are partners in the Medical Device Testing and Evaluation centre (MD-TEC) based in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. You will have access to over 100 companies developing real-world health products and seeking graduate employees in an entrepreneurial environment with mock operating theatres and wards.
Year 1 Learn the principles and practices of engineering with a healthcare focus in topics such as electronic engineering, engineering science, human anatomy and physiology for engineers, mathematics for engineers and software engineering. Undertake a team project based on a real-world example. Year 2 Develop your skills and knowledge further in topics such as biomaterials, biomechanics, and mathematical applications. Carry out two hands-on projects to design and develop advanced medical instruments. Year 3 Expand your understanding of advanced topics including biotechnology and regenerative medicine, computational fluid dynamics (CFD)/ finite element analysis (FEA) for biomedical engineering, kinematics and prosthetics and medical imaging. The individual research project will consolidate your abilities with the development of a complete medical device: from the concept proposal to the final prototype design. MEng year (optional) Complete a research project and study topics such as research methods and statistics, leadership skills, and clinical trials and medical regulations. Modules are uniquely delivered via distance learning, allowing you to undertake them whilst working in the biomedical engineering industry. Admissions Review Process All candidates are considered on an individual basis and the whole application is reviewed which includes previous and predicted qualifications, any experience, references and motivation. Whilst the grades listed here are our entry requirements, we understand that predicted grades are only an estimate. We will therefore consider applicants with lower predicted grades if the application is of a high standard which includes a strong personal statement and academic reference.
