Course summary
Our MA User Experience and Service Design degree will develop your critical awareness of major issues in user experience (UX) design, service design and interaction design. The MA User Experience and Service Design equips students to become human centred designers within industry, empowered to design socially and environmentally responsible products and services. The content of the programme will enable you to develop your skills and competencies in both the creative and analytical aspects of UX, whilst working on a diverse range of projects. This includes the opportunity to design experiences that embed digital in the physical world, take an empathic and systemic world view, and use the opportunities presented by new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) to design compelling product and service experiences. You will develop key skills in user experience design principles and practice including: qualitative and quantitative design research methods, storytelling, interactive prototyping, video prototyping, experience prototyping, interaction design, usability testing, service design, social design, team working and project management. You will further develop your UX research and design practice skills within an evidence-based major project. The MA in User Experience and Service Design is offered alongside a parallel MSc in User Experience Design programme. The key difference is that the MA has a more empathic and broader world-view of user experience design, whereas the MSc is more focused on empirical investigation, data analysis and technologies that can create great user experiences.
Entry requirements
A 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification). We consider students from a range of disciplines relevant to User Experience Design (including Art and Design, Computer Science, Media, Psychology, Business). All students, of any nationality, who are from a design-related background should provide a portfolio showing examples of work relevant to the MA User Experience and Service Design. This should be around 10 pages long and must demonstrate your current understanding of human centred design, including your design process, the project outcome and how you considered the end user experience. Critical reflection on how you could improve your process and project outcomes is encouraged. If your degree/background means you do not have a portfolio, your personal statement must explain your interest in user experience design and why you want to study on the MA User Experience and Service Design course.

The tuition fees shown are for new students commencing the first year of study in the specified year only. The fee stated is for a full-time student undertaking a master’s programme of 180 credits. Part-time students, or those taking a postgraduate certificate or a postgraduate diploma, should divide the published fee by 180 credits and then multiply by the number of credits they are taking to calculate their tuition fees.
Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
