Course summary
Are you fascinated by abstract concepts such as infinity and symmetry? Do you want to develop your skills in problem solving and analysis? Our BSc Mathematics (International Study) will prepare you for a career in which you can apply the knowledge and skills you have learnt. The course will enable you to enhance and develop your transferable skills in project work, group study and presentations. There's a range of specialised modules across all branches of mathematics, based upon our diverse research interests. Our academics are working on problems that span:
- medicine, biotechnology and food security
- epidemic modelling
- fluid mechanics, with applications in industry and biology
- statistical machine learning
- algebra and number theory
- mathematical finance
- abstract mathematical structures
- ordinary and partial differential equations
- probabilistic and statistical models
- mathematical finance
- quantum mechanics and relativity
- data analytics

- medicine
- software development
- teaching
- Spend time abroad - gain confidence and amazing experiences
- Attend guest lectures - join talks and workshops run by our Industrial Advisory Group and alumni
- Transferable skills - in group work, presentations and projects
- PASS - students in higher years help with first-year topics and support you to settle in (Peer-Assisted Study Support programme)
- Learn a language - broaden your career options by learning a language alongside your degree
Modules
All students follow a common programme of study for the first year. You will focus on core modules that provide a solid foundation in the main mathematical topics. You'll build on your existing knowledge in areas such as calculus, probability and statistics. There will also be an introduction to key mathematical concepts in pure and applied mathematics. During the second year, you'll start to specialise, by choosing from a range of optional modules. There's also the chance to improve your language skills by selecting modules outside of mathematics. Your third year will be spent studying abroad. This time will be spent learning maths and other subjects in a different teaching environment. This can help improve your employability and be a great life experience. You will develop confidence and key skills in communication by studying within a new culture. The final year provides you with even more freedom to choose optional modules in the areas that interest you. From cryptography to quantum theory, or fluid dynamics, you'll have multiple options to choose from. You will study a project module which allows you to consolidate your mathematical knowledge and understanding, whilst gaining experience of working collaboratively to solve complex problems. Please visit the university webpage for full details of the modules available.
