Course summary

Develop the knowledge to practise trade law or work for governments, international businesses and NGOs. Join this flexible online LLM you can study part-time, with optional Professional Skills training in treaty negotiation. Join an online LLM that gives you a route to specialise in treaty negotiation. International trade law and trade negotiation are attracting increased interest given economic globalisation, trade wars, world events like Brexit, and emphasis on sustainable development issues in trade policy. Gain the specialist legal skills you need to succeed in this fascinating and challenging field. With this unique online law programme, you can choose to graduate with one of two LLM qualifications: LLM in International Trade Law

  • 100% online, with a dissertation, or
LLM in International Trade Law and Treaty Negotiation with Professional Skills
  • online, with an on-campus Professional Skills summer school in place of a dissertation.

Modules

LLM International Trade Law is delivered 100% online, with a dissertation. You can study with us anywhere in the world and manage your study hours to suit you. LLM in International Trade Law and Treaty Negotiation with Professional Skills is delivered via blended learning. It combines flexible online study with a Professional Skills Summer School on campus in Aberdeen in lieu of your dissertation.

Assessment method

Within the taught element of the programme, i.e. the 4 courses which the students undertake, a range of forms of assessment are found: such as written examination, individual and group oral presentation and essays. In addition, between May and mid-August, students prepare a 10,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice related to their specialist LLM programme.

International applicants

You do not need a visa to study online with us. But if you will be joining us on campus for part of this degree, you may need to obtain a visa to do so. You will need to make your own transport, accommodation and visa arrangements to study with us here in Aberdeen. If you have a visa query, email [email protected] for advice.

Entry requirements

A 2:1 (upper-second) honours degree (or equivalent) in Law. Relevant practical experience in a related field will also be beneficial. These are our minimum entry requirements. They are given as a guide and do not guarantee entry.

To study for a postgraduate degree at the University of Aberdeen it is essential that you can speak, understand, read, and write academic English fluently. We can assess your English language proficiency through a variety of means: through your nationality, through the qualifications you gained in high school, through the degree you undertook or are undertaking at university, or through a recognised English language test. Postgraduate Higher requirements are used by the Schools of Business; Divinity, History and Philosophy; Education; Language, Literature, Music and Visual Culture; Law; and Social Sciences. The MSc in Oil and Gas Enterprise Management and the MSc in Integrated Petroleum Geoscience also make use of the Postgraduate Higher requirements. Additional fee information

Fees for this programme are charged per 15 credits and you only pay for the credits you want to study in the upcoming term. It's up to you how many credits you take each term, which gives you control over your costs and your workload. Taking fewer credits will increase the length of your studies. Cost per 15 credits for this degree, starting in academic year 2023-24 is £1,230. Tuition fees typically rise a little each academic year (normally around 5-9% increase). Indicative cost of the Master of Laws is £15,240 based on 180 credits of study over two years, starting in September 2023. (PgCert = 60 credits; PgDip = 120 credits; MSc = 180 credits).
