Course summary

Studying for the HND Photography, you will build on advanced camera and studio lighting skills, postproduction, darkroom printing and alternative processes, while gaining valuable experience in planning and managing ambitious photographic projects. During the course you will be supported to develop creative ideas through reflection and in-depth practical exploration of current photographic practices. Throughout the duration of the course, you will review contemporary advanced techniques in a variety of photographic genres, such as product, fashion, portrait, documentary, fine art and commercial photography. You will have plenty of opportunities to create innovative photographs and communicate thought-provoking concepts, while establishing yourself in your chosen area of photography. This is a Level 5 course equivalent to second year university and is for those students that have completed a HNC in Photography, or relevant subject. It is delivered on a part-time basis over two years. The interaction of technical, theoretical and creative aspects of photography is central in the delivery of the HND programme with the intention of keeping up to date with the rapidly evolving photography industry. Throughout your studies you will develop a range of practical skills highly valued by employers, as well as strong collaborative working, problem solving and communication skills that you will need to succeed as a professional. The learning takes place in small groups; it is further enriched with guest lecturers and gallery visits. Students benefit from 1 to 1 support and a variety of teaching styles by lecturers with professional experience as photographers. This is a current Association of Photographers (AOP) accredited course, offering students a free AOP student membership.

Modules

By the end of this course, you will be able to: • Use advance studio lighting techniques to produce impactful photographs • Create innovative images using a range of up to date post-production techniques • Apply darkroom techniques effectively to produce high quality B&W prints that explore the relationship between technique and bespoke output. • Analyse the characteristics of photographic images in different contexts and effectively use camera techniques to communicate thought-provoking concepts through image making. • Present a strong photographic portfolio in an online platform On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: BTEC Higher National Diploma in Art and Design [EDEXCEL]

Assessment method

Progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed regularly. At the end of each unit the work will be assessed and written constructive feedback will be provided with suggestion for future improvements. Throughout the course students will be greatly encouraged to work independently and entirely supported to achieve their full potential.

Qualification requirements

Applicants should have previously completed a level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) programme, as the Higher National Diploma (HND) is a continuation of the HNC course. GCSEs, grade 4/C or above, in Math and English (or an equivalent level of qualification) is desirable.

For non-native English speakers, an IELTS 5.5 is required.

Additional fee information

There is a materials fee of £50.00, which covers the cost of essential materials. When visiting exhibitions, if there is an entry fee you will be expected to cover it. You will also need to anticipate the cost of film and darkroom paper, for the completion of the darkroom unit. The academic year will end with an exhibition. For this, there will be additional printing and possibly framing costs.
