Course summary

Innovation is the key for companies who wish to grow, survive and outperform their competitors. On this MSc, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge to lead and manage innovation at operational and strategic levels. Focusing on new-product and service development in private- and public-sector organisations, you’ll:

  • understand the causes, consequences and managerial implications of scientific development, technological progress and innovation
  • analyse complex trends and challenges such as digital transformations and environmental sustainability
  • learn to create appropriate value from innovation
  • analyse innovation management challenges in a variety of economic and organisational contexts.
This course draws on the expertise of innovation management experts from SPRU – Science Policy Research Unit, based in the University of Sussex Business School. You’ll benefit from our collaboration with the OECD, Sussex Innovation Centre, Wired Sussex and other innovative organisations. You’ll also learn from guest speakers about their innovation management practices. Accreditation

We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2022/23. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity. We’ll do our best to provide as much optional choice as we can, but timetabling constraints mean it may not be possible to take some module combinations. The structure of a small number of courses means that the order of modules or the streams you choose may determine whether modules are core or optional. This means that your core modules or options may differ from what’s shown below. We’ll display the modules running in the academic year 2023/24 as soon as possible. While it’s our aim for students to take their preferred combinations of options, this can’t be guaranteed and will be subject to timetabling. Options may be grouped and if so, students will be able to choose a set number of options from the selection available in any particular group. They give you a solid grounding in your chosen subject and prepare you to explore the topics that interest you most. All year MSc Professional Placement Year Science, Technology and Innovation Challenge You’ll have the opportunity to compete for a prize for developing novel science, technology and innovation ideas. Our Science, Technology and Innovation Challenge helps you develop skills in: presenting communication critical thinking. You can work on your own or in a small team. At the end of the year, you’ll pitch your idea to a panel of industry experts and a live audience. The Challenge is optional. It’s designed to enrich your academic studies and give you the opportunity to apply knowledge gained from the course. It’ll also allow you to explore essay and dissertation topics.

Assessment method

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, multiple-choice tests, essays, group reports and an individual research dissertation.


Entry requirements

A lower 2nd Class (2.2) undergraduate Honours degree or above. Subject-specific requirements - Your qualification can be in any subject. You may also be considered for the course if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing. English language requirements IELTS (Academic) Standard level (6.0 overall, including at least 5.5 in each component).
