Veterinary Gateway Programme at Royal Veterinary College, University of London - UCAS

Course summary

The Veterinary Gateway programme is a targeted Widening Participation initiative aimed at students who want to study veterinary medicine but who might not otherwise meet our entry requirements. This is a six-year course that integrates a preparatory 'Gateway' year designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to study veterinary medicine. Successful completion of the Gateway year does not give you a qualification in itself, but does lead automatically into our five-year BVetMed programme, which will qualify you to practice as a veterinarian. This course is open to UK students only, who come from a Widening Participation background. The full criteria can be found on the RVC website. .

Additional entry requirements

Health checks

Applicants will need to pass an Occupational Health assessment before enrolling onto this course. Applicants should also read the RCVS' guidance on Day One Competencies: https://animalowners.rcvs.org.uk/document-library/day-one-competences/

Interview

All applicants to this course must attend an interview if invited and cannot receive an offer without attending an interview. Interviews are held for selected applicants at our Camden campus, normally in late January and February. However, in 2021 and 2022 interviews were conducted online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. At present, we cannot confirm how and where interviews will take place in 2023, but the requirement to attend an interview before an offer can be issued will still stand. Invitations to interview are sent by email around 2-3 weeks before the interview date. Once issued, applicants are required to respond to their interview invitation by email within 5 working days. If invited, it may not be possible to rearrange an interview for a different date, so applicants must ensure they are available for interview before applying and inform us by email of any specific days when they are unavailable. Please note that if you apply to more than one of our Veterinary Medicine courses (excluding the Bachelor of Veterinary Science) and your application progresses to the interview stage, you will be invited to attend one interview only which will be used in our assessment of each of your applications.

Other

As a Widening Participation course, the Veterinary Gateway programme is only available to UK students that satisfy specific non-academic requirements. Details of the Widening Participation criteria will be available on the following page of the RVC website: http://www.rvc.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/veterinary-gateway#tab-entry-requirements In order to determine Widening Participation eligibility, all applicants must submit a Supplementary Gateway Form, which is available on the RVC website. This must be sent by email to [email protected] by 1February 2023. The form also gives you the opportunity to provide any additional information you feel may be relevant to your application that you did not include in your UCAS personal statement. Although the course has no specific work experience requirements, it is desirable if you can gain work experience in veterinary practices and in other animal environments (e.g. kennels, cattery, animal shelter, farm, stables, zoo, pet shop, etc.). If you wish to inform us of work experience you have completed, there is a section to do this in the Supplementary Gateway Form.
