Course summary
The purpose of Higher Nationals in Music is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the music industry and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them. The Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Music offers students a specialist pathway designed to support progression into relevant occupational areas or on to degree-level study. Holders of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma will have developed a sound understanding of the principles in their field of study and will have learned to apply those principles more widely. They will have learned to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems. They will be able to perform effectively in their chosen field and will have the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making.

Assessment method
A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used that encourage learners’ creative and musical development. Methods used will encourage both individual and collaborative learning through the use of practical workshops, live performance projects, interactive lectures, seminars, guest lectures, tutorials, discussion and critiques and rehearsals. Students will critically reflect on their own development of skills and performance and that of others. There will be opportunities presented to attend a variety of shows, encompassing different genres. Assessment can by via the form of live performance work, ensemble sessions, presentations, portfolios, essays, podcasts, online blogs and practical demonstrations.
