International Education (English Language Teaching) at University of Bedfordshire - UCAS

Course summary

This course focuses on supporting English Language Teachers to further develop and enhance their teaching skills, in line with the view that teaching should now be considered a Masters’ level qualification. English Language Teachers from international contexts will be supported to continue to develop and enhance their skills, in the context of a lifelong learning approach to the continuous professional development needs of educators. This course shares provision with our other 2 International Education pathways, with a core unit unique to this course, and substantial English Language Teaching related material covered in shared units. A key element of this course will be a placement based opportunity. Students will have a substantial opportunity to observe practice in relation to English Language Teaching in a UK education setting, to allow them to reflect on how the practice they observe can support their own professional development. A DBS clearance may be required for this placement, and you will be supported by Personal Tutors to apply for this. Students will be exposed to global trends and thinking in relation to issues that English Language Teachers face in schools. They will engage with theorists from a variety of disciplines, and explore how they influence the policy and practice of schools. They will also be supported to develop the skills to become a reflective practitioner, considering their strengths, and how they can continue to develop their skills.  This ELT pathway offers the opportunity to combine our  MA International Education provision with knowledge and critical understanding of  theories and practices related to the Teaching and Learning of English as a Second Language. This ELT element provides the opportunity to Educators and TESOL practitioners to study and experience some of the key issues related to the Teaching and Learning of English as a Second Language from an international perspective. It involves issues relevant to matters associated with the internationalisation of the current curriculum such as language acquisition, bilingualism and multilingualism, patterns of interaction and the teaching and learning of English across borders. Given the global reach of the English Language Teaching and Learning industry and the fact that English is an international, global language, this ELT pathway provides a core element to the international education dimension of this course, with a range of shared content but also content typical of the language teaching and learning context.
