Course summary
Now is the time for environmental action. Gain the skills, knowledge and international insight to see how you can make a difference by studying our exclusive BSc (Hons) Environmental Geography with Studies in the USA degree. The devastating impact of climate change, highlighted by Greta Thunberg and Sir David Attenborough, reveals the damage societies can knowingly and unknowingly make on our precious natural ecosystems. This hybrid curriculum not only helps you to build core geographical investigation skills, you will also acquire the foresight to respond and mitigate climatic and environmental changes. Unique learning experience The modern geographer needs a different type of skill set for emerging environment-based roles - so we've built a course to help you prepare. On this exclusive degree course, we've combined the holistic investigative approach of a geographer with the applied skills of an environmental manager. Initially, you will explore the effects of climate change, earth surface processes, fluvial processes, food security, sustainability and environmental management. There is a change of scenery in your second year as you take your studies stateside, joining fellow geographers studying at the University of Toledo in the USA. Returning to Salford for your final year, you'll build further knowledge about mitigating climate change and focus your studies with options that focus on the data management and environmental decision-making. Fieldwork is a key element of this course, and trips are aligned with modules so you develop applied skills and gain practical experience. Small group teaching is another key course benefit, and there are strong links between course content and research projects led by our Ecosystems and Environment Research Centre. Take your studies stateside At the heart of this course is the year you will spend with Toledo University in Ohio, USA - our exchange partner for over 30 years. Here, you will study a range of modules similar to those offered in year two at Salford, with support from tutors at Toledo and Salford throughout. Alongside making new friends and a lifetime of memories, you'll be inspired by Toledo’s Geography and Planning department, as you roam the physical and human landscapes of Ohio and surrounding areas. Features • Become a next-generation geographer, as you build a hybrid skill set grounded in geography, geology and environmental management • Experience international study by spending a year with our partner University of Toledo in the USA • Study across both geography and environmental management subject areas to build a broad range of relevant skills
Modules
During the first year, you will follow a structured suite of modules, carefully designed to increase your subject knowledge, develop confidence and prepare you for the rest of the programme. Themes covered include the effects of climate change, earth surface processes, food security, fluvial processes, resources, sustainability and how to manage impacts on the environment. The first year also looks to develop practical skills which you get to practice and implement on a UK-based residential field course. In the second year you will conduct the Studies in the USA element of the programme. This involves you spending your second year at the University of Toledo in the USA. You will undertake studies at Toledo in themes such as conservation, environmental planning, industrial geography, while developing skills in mapping, Geographical Information Systems and quantitative methods. In the final year you will undertake a dissertation (independent research project) and a compulsory module in Mitigating Climate Change. In addition you will have the option to study themes around environmental modelling, remote sensing, corporate environmental management, environmental decision making and sustainability in urban areas. For your dissertation you will be encouraged to develop a topic around the mitigation and amelioration of climate and environmental change.
