Course summary

Reasons to choose Kingston

  • This course is accredited by the BPS as fulfilling the requirements of Stage 1 training to become a Chartered Forensic Psychologist.
  • Kingston has close links to forensic settings in London and the surrounding area. Guest speakers are active practitioners in forensic services from prisons, and low, medium, and high security hospitals (for example, Broadmoor).
  • A placement in a setting related to forensic psychology practice.
About this course You will study the application of psychology in various forensic settings and be introduced to the role of the forensic psychologist. You will examine the legal aspects of forensic psychology (e.g. courts and sentencing) and factors that may lead to criminal behaviour. Your work placement will last at least 15 weeks (two days a week). Settings include secure hospitals, children’s homes, and youth offending teams. Alternatively, you may be offered a research placement reflecting your area of interest. You will have one-to-one supervision for your placement and dissertation. Example modules

Students have gone on to work as assistant psychologists in secure units and other roles within children’s services, charities and other destinations in the criminal justice system.

Entry requirements

A 2:1 or above honours degree or equivalent in psychology with BPS accreditation. Selection will include an interview. Candidates with non-standard qualifications but with relevant experience are welcome to apply. Interviews If you meet the minimum requirement for this programme your application will be considered further and you may be invited to an interview. This will be a face-to-face meeting or for International students based overseas it will be via skype.
