Course summary

Our PhD in Philosophy is a three year full-time (six years part-time) programme. You will undertake substantial original research, which will form a thesis of approximately 70,000 words. Throughout, you will work closely with an expert supervisor, with further guidance from at least one extra supervisor. Our staff are experts, many internationally renowned, in a variety of key areas of Philosophy. We provide a wealth of opportunities for postgraduate researchers. Some of our main areas of research strength are:

  • Mind and Language.
  • Metaphysics.
  • History of Analytic Philosophy.
  • Engaged Philosophy.
  • Aesthetics.
You will become part of a lively PhD community of around 30 students working on a variety of topics including:
  • The nature of love;
  • Environmental ethics;
  • Meaning in art;
  • Lying;
  • Metaontology;
  • Religious faith.
Our weekly PhD research seminar, run by PhD students for PhD students, will give you the opportunity to present your work and discuss it with your peers. In your final year, you will also be encouraged to present your work at the Philosophy department's research seminar. You will have a dedicated working space alongside other Philosophy PhD students in the Humanities Bridgeford Street building, accessible 24/7.


Entry requirements

Candidates MUST normally have; Bachelors (Honours) degree (or overseas equivalent) at 2:1 level or above in a cognate subject, and normally a Masters degree at 65% overall average with minimum 65% in dissertation and with no mark below 55% (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant cognate subject, preferably one with a substantial research methods component. Transcripts will be carefully scrutinised to ensure that applicants have the required background. Note; due to the volume of applications received each year, and limited spaces, regrettably offers cannot be made to all applicants who satisfy the academic entry criteria. All applicants who pass the initial assessment stage will be interviewed before any offer is confirmed.
