Course summary

Media and Sociology allows you to develop your innovative and imaginative approach towards your creative learning and build key skills in problem solving and critical analysis. You will explore the evolution and influence of media in society and experiment with various media forms in your theoretical and practical studies. You will also tackle a range of important social issues through research and reflection as well as building awareness of the core concepts of sociology, enabling you to become an independent and critical thinker. Combining Media and Sociology at Keele provides an in-depth programme which explores the social world and how media is perceived across various areas, such as business, history and politics. You will develop significant theoretical skills as well as the ability to implement your practical skills through film making and editing. Sociology delves into the challenges faced by individuals and how these are managed in the society we live in, enabling you to identify and critically evaluate topics such as ethnicity, class, migration and feminism. You will investigate how these topics promote inclusion in society or create social divisions based on different opinions and experiences. Similarly, Media will allow you to explore the role of news outlets and social media within the social environment, and the developments of these outlets over time. You will apply your learning to consider influential factors such as culture and technology, before analysing key themes and concepts to later apply to your practical work. Throughout the course you will develop your imaginative thinking and awareness around social inequalities and a range of important sociological issues.
