Graduate LLB Professional Law and SQE (Senior Status)

Course summary

The York Law School Professional LLB in Law (Senior Status) offers a unique, innovative approach to the study of law for graduates with ambitions of professional legal qualification. This three-year programme offers an unique opportunity to develop a sound academic and professional base before progressing on to training for the external Solicitors Qualification Examinations. The first two years of the LLB is based on a significant component of problem-based learning (PBL). Working in a Student Law Firm (SLF), you will analyse authentic legal problems for clients to develop your knowledge of the fundamental principles and application of English law. You will also develop a broad range of academic and practical legal skills: research; critical thinking; fact analysis; problem-solving; interviewing; advising; case analysis; negotiation; and advocacy. In the final year, you will be able to prepare for both of the Solicitors Qualification Examinations - SQE1 and SQE2 - whilst gaining wider experience, understanding and professional skills for employment in legal practice. As well as core SQE1 and SQE2 modules, you will be able to choose from a number of practice-focused modules, to help further your professional career goals. Your learning will be guided and supported by a tutor team experienced in vocational and professional training, and all of whom are qualified legal practitioners. Your personal development, employability and professional ambitions are also at the core of the LLB. In addition to the academic, professional and communication skills described above, you will develop team-working, interpersonal and planning skills in your student law firm. You will be a professional and ethically aware graduate, able to reflect on your individual learning and career development, evaluating your progress and identifying how to develop further to achieve your personal ambitions. Should you wish to progress into the legal professions, you will find that lawyers like you, with expertise and experience both in law and in another discipline, can be highly valued. What you take from the LLB will also be useful to you both if you choose to pursue a different career path. Knowledge of the law is useful in a wide range of professions, and to citizenship as a whole. Moreover, the skills which you will develop are valued not merely by lawyers, but in a broad range of contexts.
