Course summary
"The MSc Gerontology (Distance Learning) programme offers you the opportunity to study gerontology from a distance, allowing you to access learning resources online in a flexible manner. Understanding the process of population ageing brings critical advantages to employees in a range of professional sectors, such as the health and social care, research, and the local and national policy sectors. The programme will equip you with academic knowledge in Gerontology, focusing on evidence related to the wellbeing of older people, and with policy knowledge relating to social policies aimed at preparing societies for ageing populations. In addition, the programme will offer you a range of training opportunities in research methods, both quantitative and qualitative. The PG Diploma in Gerontology (Distance Learning) is a programme delivered completely online, offering you the opportunity to complete six modules in the area of ageing. The programme includes an introduction to the discipline of Gerontology and offers you options to specialise in topics such as health and wellbeing, poverty and social protection, and mental health. It allows you to consider a range of careers in the areas of health and social care, policy-making and research. Having successfully completed this programme, you are welcome to progress your studies to the MSc Gerontology (DL) programme."
Modules
Compulsory module: Perspectives in Gerontology (DL). Two optional modules from: Ageing, Health and Wellbeing (DL); Demographic Change, Ageing and Globalisation (DL); Qualitative Research Methods (DL); Quantitative Research Methods (DL); Poverty and Social Protection Around the World (DL); Mental Health and Ageing (DL).
Assessment method
A variety of assessment methods are employed, which include essays, oral presentations, group work, exercises, research reports and the dissertation. All programme modules have their own page on Blackboard. Students are able to access materials (lecture slides, recordings of lectures, coursework details, references and module updates) to supplement their independent study.
Entry requirements
Upper second-class degree or equivalent; applicants without formal qualifications but with relevant experience considered.
