Course summary
The rapidly changing patterns of worldwide social, political and economic exchange exemplified by the end of the Cold War, the technology boom and bust cycle and the contentious discourse of neoliberal globalisation have focused the attention of students and their potential future employers on the multidisciplinary perspective offered by studying International Political Economy. Students will study the interaction between markets and politics in conjunction with policy on these areas and how it influences markets. Political Economy at BSIS focuses on the state, markets and society, the study of economic law, corporate governance and capitalism and democracy. The exposure you are given to policy practice at the international institutions based in Brussels - together with high-quality education - prepares you for a challenging and fulfilling career in international and domestic public policy, diplomacy, non-governmental organisations, as well as in the private sector. Additionally, it allows for a specialisation in a subfield such as development, environmental policy, migration, conflict and security, political strategy and European public policy, and so equips you with cutting-edge qualifications. The MA is offered in both a standard version (90 ECTS credits) and an extended version (120 ECTS credits) and in each case students may take the programme with or without a secondary specialisation. Those on the extended version take more modules to gain extra credit.
Assessment method
Assessment is by coursework plus the dissertation.
Entry requirements
Students should hold a bachelor degree for entry to this Master's degree. We accept a wide range of subjects for entry and you do not need to have necessarily studied Political Science or law previously. Typical first degrees of our students include Economics, History, Classics, Languages, Philosophy, Geography & Psychology (among others). The standard of the degree will normally be at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree from countries such as the UK, Ghana, Nigeria or Kenya, or a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 under the American system from an accredited institution or equivalent. We do review candidates application on a case by case basis and extensive work experience may compensate for a slightly lower degree result. We accept a wide range of qualifications and you can find the general entry requirements for some countries on the University’s main website. Students can apply before completion of the bachelor degree and if successful in obtaining a place, you would be made a conditional offer.
