Modules
Module A: Process and Practice (Year 1) Assessment 1: Concept and Development (85 Credits) This unit introduces the fundamentals of screenwriting including narrative structure, character development, and visual storytelling. You will analyse how stories are constructed, explore historical and theoretical approaches to screenwriting, and begin generating original concepts through creative exercises. You will also develop core technical and professional skills, including formatting, script annotation, and workshop collaboration. Assessment 2: Creative Project (35 Credits) You will apply your knowledge to produce a short screenplay, taking your idea from concept through to final draft. Working from a brief, you will learn how to structure scenes, shape tone, and write with clarity and impact. The process will involve planning, feedback, redrafting, and a formal presentation of your work. Module B: Professional Creative Practice (Year 2) Assessment 1: Personal Professional Development (45 Credits) This unit helps you assess your strengths as a writer and explore the different pathways available in the screen industries. You will develop your portfolio and explore the collaborative dynamics of writers’ rooms. You will also strengthen your technical abilities and explore how to pitch your ideas effectively across formats and platforms. Assessment 2: Professional Project (75 Credits) You will write an original script for screen — choosing your genre, format, and narrative style. Whether it is a feature film outline, a short screenplay, or the pilot for a series, this unit will allow you to showcase your voice while applying advanced writing techniques. The final work will be accompanied by supporting materials that reflect your professional growth and creative decisions. Year 3 MODULE 1: CRITICAL RESEARCH (15 CREDITS) Explore screenwriting through academic and practical research. Develop essential skills in reflection, problem-solving, and writing that prepare you for the final project. MODULE 2: SPECIALIST NEGOTIATED PRACTICAL PROJECT (45 CREDITS) Design your own creative project based on your interests and career goals. Build your creative portfolio with real, hands-on work. MODULE 3: FILM & TV BUSINESS PRACTICES (15 CREDITS) Gain essential knowledge of the film industry, including job roles, legal frameworks, funding, and distribution. You’ll complete a case study or film. MODULE 4: FINAL PROJECT – FILM PRACTICES (45 CREDITS) Your final project will serve as a portfolio piece suitable for film festivals, online platforms, or professional submissions—helping you take the next step into the industry.
