This is a Masters-level qualification in teacher education. WHY THIS PROGRAMME

  • The programme consists of 18 weeks of study in the University and 18 weeks of school experience in our partner schools.
  • If you are an aspiring teacher, this programme will provide you with the knowledge, skills and values you need to become the committed professional necessary for today’s schools.
-As well as offering courses in educational and curricular issues, the programme also highlights the importance of practitioner enquiry. This systematic reflection on teaching in the classroom gives the programme its distinctive Masters character. -In agreement with the Scottish Government, the School of Education, through the St Andrew’s Foundation, provides for the preparation of students to teach in Catholic Schools in Scotland. The PGDE Primary Programme offers a route that incorporates the Catholic Teacher’s Certificate. -Refer to UCAS codes to ensure you apply for the route you are interested in. Note that these codes represent different routes through the same programme of study. Applicants should apply only once using the UCAS code for either: -PGDE Primary Education or -PGDE Primary Education including Catholic Teachers’ Certificate PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The programme will prepare you to meet the demands of the profession through the following areas of study: UNDERSTANDING LEARNING AND TEACHING LEARNING AND TEACHING IN THE PRIMARY CURRICULUM PROFESSIONAL ENQUIRY SCHOOL PLACEMENT CAREER PROSPECTS GTC Qualification You will have the General Teaching Council (GTC) for Scotland qualification to pursue teaching roles in schools. Many of our graduates are teaching not only in Scotland’s primary and secondary schools, but throughout the UK and further abroad.

Entry requirements

Academic Entry The minimum academic entry requirements for admission to a teaching qualification are: Degree: An undergraduate degree validated by a higher education institution in the United Kingdom or an undergraduate degree of an equivalent standard from a higher education institution outside the United Kingdom. All degree classifications are considered, however, priority is given to candidates with a 1st or 2:1 honours degree. English: National Qualifications in English at SCQF Level 6 (for example, Higher Grade) or an accepted alternative from the list below. Mathematics: National Qualifications in Mathematics at SCQF Level 5 (for example, National 5, Standard Grade or Intermediate 2) or an accepted alternative from the list below. PLEASE NOTE: Applicants must have achieved their English and Maths qualifications PRIOR to application. Applicants who apply with a pending English or Maths qualification with see their application rejected. Pending degree qualifications are considered.
