If your dream is to become an animator, but you don't yet have the full portfolio to apply for our three-year course, then our BA (Hons) Animation four-year degree is ideal for you. Established in 1972 by Academy Award winner Bob Godfrey, ours is one of the best-known and highly-regarded animation courses in the world, with graduates going on to create such icons as Hey Duggee, Peppa Pig and Compare the Market’s Meerkats. On the four-year version of this course, year zero will give you the chance to develop your drawing skills, learn the essentials of generating content and ideas and work on a themed project. Whatever your preferred medium – whether you want to make animated films using CGI, traditional drawing, oil on glass, sand animation or pixelation – you will be encouraged to follow your passions and aim high for your future career. Along the way, we’ll support you with our extensive knowledge, facilities, experience and industry contacts, providing everything you’ll need to become an innovative storyteller and artist.
Year 0 is a preparatory year which provides you with a focused introduction to your chosen area of study and upon successful completion, it'll secure your place on the three year degree without further application or interview. In Year 1, you'll be introduced to the University and the technical workshops and facilities available to you. On the course you’ll learn the technical and conceptual skills that will give you a solid foundation from which to explore your areas of specialist activity. In Year 2 the focus is on finding your own specialist way of working and you’ll be encouraged and supported to start working more independently. During this year you may also have the opportunity to complete an industry work placement or even study abroad. Year 3 will see you achieve a greater level of independence with self-managed research, study and practice, resulting in a final major project and a written dissertation.

Points of entry
The following entry points are available for this course:
- Year 1
The majority of our courses require a portfolio and we consider the strength of our applicants’ portfolios, as well as their grades. This means that whilst we have a standard entry criteria of 112 UCAS tariff points (64 UCAS points for 4 year courses) and a minimum of four GCSE passes (or equivalent) at grade A*-C and/or 4-9 including English, this should be used as a guide to what we accept. The average tariff that our students achieve is significantly higher than this standard entry criteria but we also occasionally make offers which are lower to students with a strong portfolio, and those who have faced difficulties that have affected their performance and who were expected to achieve higher results. We welcome applicants who are currently studying or have completed A-Levels, Extended Diplomas (BTEC and UAL), Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, Access to Higher Education, Scottish Highers, and IB Diploma. We will consider other Level 3 qualifications on an individual basis and we are happy to accept applicants with a combination of Level 3 qualifications. You can also check how many tariff points you have achieved using the UCAS Tariff calculator: https://www.ucas.com/ucas/tariff-calculator
