Course summary

Please note this course is only available for year three (level six) entry only. The programme gives students the opportunity to analyse and understand the complexities of the world we live in, particularly in relation to Crime, Criminology and the Criminal Justice system. You will study a wide range of topics covering both legal and sociological issues of criminology and criminal justice including the social process of crime, the policing of society, social inequalities and the law, punishment and sentencing and the operation of the criminal courts. The course has real practical application in contemporary society and equips students with knowledge and skills appropriate for a range of graduate roles in criminal justice agencies, including the Police Service, the National Probation service and related fields in the voluntary and public sectors. Crime and its impact are at the forefront of current political and social debate. A degree in Social Policy and Criminal Justice enables you to explore the reality behind the newpaper headlines on crime and examine a topic which is relevant, topical and has real, practical application in contemporary society. You will study a wide range of topics covering the legal and sociological issues of criminology and criminal justice and the associated policy responses. The course equips students with knowledge and skills appropriate for a range of graduate roles in the statutory, voluntary and commercial sector. Teaching and learning is designed to support digital literacy. Students will acquire the skills necessary to gather evidence and apply theories to a range of social and political issues. Students are encouraged to share knowledge and be enterprising with their ideas.
