This degree prepares trainee teachers to teach within the Primary age range (3 -11) on your chosen route: 3-7, 5-11 or 7-11. It progressively leads you to the standards required of a newly qualified teacher, set in new facilities at one of the country's foremost centres of teacher education, in a stimulating multi-cultural environment. The degree fulfils the latest National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) criteria for teacher training and has strong partnership links with local schools throughout West Yorkshire and beyond. At the heart of the degree is school experience, and we provide an extensive programme of school placements throughout every year of the course, giving you the opportunity to practise your teaching skills while being supported by school staff and College tutors. In the first year, you will have a general introduction to all curriculum areas. During the second year, you will have the chance to undertake more specialist study in a specific subject such as: Language, Humanities, Mathematics, Science or Creative Arts. If you select a subject specialism in English, Mathematics or Science, this will be named in your degree award at the end of the course. You also have the opportunity for additional study in an area of special interest linked with a placement. Possible choices include: special educational needs, drama in education, international dimensions to education and other studies associated with primary education, allowing you to experience education in a variety of settings. Our teacher educators are an exceptionally strong team and we have an enviable tradition of producing effective practitioners positively equipped to meet local, regional and national needs, and grounded in educating children in a multi-ethnic world. In our last Ofsted inspection for Primary and Secondary ITE we were judged to be at least Good with some Outstanding features. We anticipate a continuing need for teachers of primary children in the foreseeable future, particularly in meeting the needs of different communities. This course will give you the training you require to fulfil these needs.
Modules
We cover all subjects that form part of the primary National Curriculum to ensure you are a strong candidate for teaching. You will develop the skills and knowledge needed to deliver English, Mathematics and Science in creative and engaging ways. Other modules include: Early Years Principles and Practice; Becoming an Effective Teacher; Exploration of the Creative Arts & Humanities; Addressing the Special Educational Needs Continuum. You will also learn about Computing in the primary curriculum and enhance your personal skills. Teaching children how to be healthy through physical education and teaching food and nutrition is part of your academic study as well as your teaching practice. We have strong partnership links with local schools, whose staff make a significant contribution to your training. Partnership schools are situated in Bradford and the neighbouring local authorities to give a wide range of experiences and to meet the needs of students from across the region. Each year includes a school placement with serial visits and a block attachment. This lets you develop sound professional relationships with staff and children. You are never 'thrown in at the deep end', but supported by school staff and College tutors until you develop confidence. There may even be an opportunity for a placement in America, Pakistan, China, Africa or Europe as part of your Year 3 programme of electives.
Assessment method
Teaching methods mirror the kind of approaches used in schools and combine a wide range of resources including video, ICT and field visits. We encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning and offer you high quality support from personal tutors. You will be assessed through coursework assignments, oral presentations and a small number of written examinations. Your practical teaching skills will be assessed by your performance in school at each stage of the course. Learning and Teaching studies run throughout the course to ensure your professional development.

Interview
At interview, a written assessment and maths test will be used to evaluate your strengths and needs in literacy and numeracy. Candidates will also be required to make a short presentation.
