Course summary

Please check the Sheffield Hallam University website for the latest information. Course summary

  • Prepare for the degree with an extra foundation year at the start.
  • Gain hands-on practical skills to support technical understanding.
  • Build your knowledge of key chemical engineering topics, such as mass and energy balances, thermodynamics, process safety and reaction engineering.
  • Progress your professional skills through group and project work.
  • Understand the role of a chemical engineer in wider society.
This course establishes core chemical engineering knowledge through practical and project-based learning – with an emphasis on industrial challenges. The skills and experience gained will enable you to design safe, sustainable and cost-effective chemical plants and processes. How you learn All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive. The course is suitable if you don’t meet the entry requirements for our BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering course, or you want extra preparation before starting degree-level study. You share the first year with other engineering, maths and physics foundation year students, then move on to the degree. With online resources, industry-standard facilities and exceptional learning environments, you’ll be supported at every step. Throughout your studies you’ll gain highly-valued skills, knowledge and professional behaviours. By undertaking individual and group projects, you’ll learn how to solve industry-related problems using creativity, critical thinking, teamwork and communication. You learn through:
  • Group projects
  • Individual projects
  • Lectures and tutorials
  • Practical laboratory work
  • Computer-based learning using industry-standard software
In the foundation year, you’ll study the fundamental maths, science and engineering principles that you’ll need at undergraduate level, and apply them to a range of different topics. You’ll learn through many of the same techniques used on the degree course, and familiarise yourself with Sheffield Hallam and its facilities — ensuring that you’re ready to hit the ground running. Applied learning Work placements During your studies, you’ll be encouraged to take advantage of our second and third year placement opportunities. This gives you valuable real-world experience, meaning you’ll be fully prepared for your future career. Networking opportunities In the first year of the main degree you’ll gain an insight into the role of professional engineering institutes and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). Representatives and local members of the IChemE will be able to answer your questions on professional body memberships, allowing you to develop contacts and build your network.
