Course options

Course summary

The top-up degree validated by the TEC Partnership will enable current and previous Higher National Diploma (HND) Engineering students the ability to progress to level 6 studies in Mechanical Engineering at the Grimsby Institute. This programme will enable students to pursue professional careers in Mechanical Engineering at a graduate level which requires the exercise of professional judgement, personal responsibility and initiative, and the ability to make engineering decisions in conformance with professional Engineering standards. The programme will equip students with analytical skills to systematically employ engineering principles to produce original analysis of solutions using software applications, specific to a Mechanical Engineering context. Students will carry out independent research and manage projects in a relevant engineering context. They will use testing/validation through experimental development to enable them to become acquainted with the use of the latest technologies. This programme ultimately prepares students for post-graduate study and/or a career or employment in the respective Engineering discipline. Aspirations of students are also boosted by significant growth of engineering job vacancies, both locally and nationally which is also echoed by recent data from the Labour Market Intelligence (LMI).

Modules

Compulsory Modules: • Engineering Project/Dissertation Core Modules: • Engineering Management • Applications of Finite Element Analysis • Thermo-Fluids and Acoustics Optional Module(s): • Renewable Energy Engineering and Technology • Advanced Maintenance Techniques

Assessment method

The assessment approach is designed to ensure the student's breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding will be assessed. The methods used will be a combination of written, visual and spoken forms associated with assessments, such as: assignments/essays, exams, reports, presentations, and posters, as these will allow primary or secondary research to be applied. Visual assessments will use the poster method, whereas oral assessments will use either the presentation or demonstration method.
