Course summary

The Higher National Certificate in Construction is the industry recognised higher education qualification for trainees and practising building professionals in quantity surveying, building surveying, estimating, project planning, design and site management. The programme will allow you to train with some of the finest tutors in the region, in some of the region’s best teaching facilities, with the programme structured to enable you to train while you work.You will study eight modules covering all aspects of construction and the built environment. HNC modules include: Construction and Maintenance of Buildings, Science and Materials for Construction and the Built Environment, Design Principles and Application, Health, Safety and Welfare, Technology of Complex Buildings Unit, Group Project Unit, Law and Contract Unit and Computer Aided Design. The new York College Construction Skills Centre is a purpose built facility accommodating brickwork, joinery and plastering. The Centre contains two large workshop spaces, changing facilities, classroom and IT suites. The Construction department is staffed by a dedicated team with a huge range of industry experience including site managers, chartered surveyors and members of the Charted Institute of Building (CIOB). Tutors will ensure that you receive the support you need, when you need it, including one-on-one contact. As a HNC Construction and the Built Environment student, you can be confident you’re learning the most up to date industry practises in state-of-the-art facilities. The Construction department are proud to work with many local and national companies for their training, meaning it will meet your needs and those of the construction industry at a time when there is a skills shortage in this area.The course consists of lectures, assignment work, learning packages and practical tasks. Assessment is by a mixture of coursework, assignments, projects and case studies.This is a day release programme designed to fit round work and personal commitments. On successful completion of the programme, you may wish to progress to the Higher National Diploma Level 5 in Construction and the Built Environment at York College. HND Diploma modules include Applied Mathematics, Management Principles and Application, Conversion and Adaptation, Economics, Building Control, Properties and Performance Materials, Construction Methods and Site Surveying.Many of our students have become full members of professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Building. Many students choose to progress to degree-level study or work in the construction industry, with past students employed as Design Technicians, Joiners and Design Coordinators.
