Read our detailed explanation. About this course The Exercise Physiology MSc offers a structured framework to study theory and conduct research relating to applied exercise physiology. Our interactive and engaging modules are designed with industry professionals to enable you to become reflective, responsible and independent exercise physiologists. You'll be exposed to key industry partners, enabling them to forge professional links to advance your future career. The first intake for this course will be in September 2021. What you'll learn You will develop core knowledge in human physiology, exercise immunology, anatomy, pathophysiology of a variety of diseases, and exercise in extreme environments. You will also undertake study in the following exciting areas:

  • taking medical histories and performing physical examinations on high-level athletes as well as patients with poor physical function
  • interpreting exercise data from patients and athletes
  • understanding principles of exercise programme design for a variety of populations
  • understanding strengths and limitations of a wide range of exercise tests
  • practical skills associated with collecting and interpreting physiological data from patients and athletes
Your development We have substantial expertise in exercise physiology in a wide range of application areas. This includes:
  • exercise in the heat, cold and at altitude
  • exercise in the prevention and management of cancer
  • exercise and heart failure
  • exercise and diabetes
  • recovery and management of athletes after intensive exercise
You will have the opportunity to work with industry partners such as Newcastle United, Newcastle Falcons Rugby, Newcastle Eagles Basketball and clinician scientists from the local NHS Trusts, enabling you to build profession links to advance your career. On completing the programme you will have gained the following key skills to enable you to be a confident and successful professional:
  • advanced knowledge and critical understanding of theory, research methods and ethical issues in Exercise Physiology
  • critical understanding of knowledge in exercise physiology with a critical awareness of problems and new insights related to the exercise physiology field
  • the ability to plan, design and execute practical and research skills using appropriate exercise physiology techniques and procedures
Delivery Your teaching is delivered initially through lectures where theories, concepts and evidence are introduced. Following this, intellectual skills are developed and promoted further through group learning activities such as seminars, tutorials and practical classes. Practical and project work is designed to help you. develop key applied skills that are essential for exercise physiologists working with athletes and patients Facilities We have invested £32m in to state-of-the-art teaching facilities for Sport and Exercise. This includes:
  • exercise physiology lab
  • biomechanics lab
  • gait track
  • high performance lab
  • nutrition kitchen
  • blood preparation & analysis lab
  • an environmental chamber that enables the simulation of altitude, temperature and humidity


Entry requirements

At least a 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent, in a relevant subject such as: sport and exercise science physiology Applicants with lower or non-standard qualifications and relevant industrial experience will be considered on an individual basis. International Students: Direct Entry: IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minumum of 6.0 in all sub-skills). Pre-sessional English Language courses are not accepted as an alternative entry to this course.
