We love computer games. Designing them, building them and making sure they are offer the best player experience possible. If you do too, come and study in our dedicated Games Development Studios. You’ll learn important programming and maths concepts to help you make more interesting and fun games. You'll use the latest game development technology and high end workstations to help challenge yourself in developing the technical skills necessary to work effectively in the video games industry. Over time, you'll create a top quality portfolio to help launch an exciting career. Our course has been validated to include an optional placement year in industry. Forget the stereotypes – gaming isn’t just for teenage boys. Half of all gamers are female, and the average age is 31*. This means the industry is huge, and a variety of exciting jobs await you. Our BSc (Hons) Computer Gaming Technology is primarily a programming degree, helping you to develop the technical skills to create great games. A valuable toolset to support this is maths. Throughout our course you’ll develop the essential maths skills required to implement complex game designs, graphics and artificial intelligences aspects of your games. Right from Year 1, you’ll be creating games. Everything you design will help you build a valuable portfolio to help you secure your dream job when you graduate. There will be opportunities to take up placements or take up opportunities provided by local game developers. You'll study both the theory and practical aspects of game development and gain experience of the whole development process, from initial concepts to programming, testing and publication. You’ll spend plenty of time in our Games Development Studio, which simulates a commercial working studio and features up-to-date hardware and software. We currently have Unity 3D, Unreal Engine 4, Cry Engine, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Visual Studio/C#/C++, 3D Studio Max and Maya. Our BSc (Hons) Computer Gaming Technology degree has a significant maths and physics component in the first year. This is essential to help you create more complex games as you progress through your degree. We encourage you to engage with these subject areas, before applying, in order to get the most out of your studies. The subject can be challenging, but we'll support you through this process and help you to develop technically and professionally. Our course is located in its own specialist game development labs, located next to the Games Art labs where you’ll collaborate closely with Games Art and Audio Technology students. You’ll have the opportunity to get involved in game-jams, guest lectures, workshops and interact with game developers. Eighteen per cent of the UK games industry is based in Cambridge**, so it’s a great place to study, surrounded by studios large and small. Many famous developers are based locally, including Sony, Frontier, Jagex, Inertia Game Studios, Eidolon Studios and PTM Games. Our department is also a member of TIGA, the association for games developers in the UK. We host the annual Brains Eden Gaming Festival, when students from across Britain and Europe compete in teams to build games.

Throughout the course, we’ll use a range of assessment methods to help measure your progress. You’ll demonstrate your learning through the games you produce, but there will also be a mix of exams, personal learning plans and projects.
