Course summary
This course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to become a reflective, independent and critical member of the health and social care workforce. The principles of intelligent compassion run throughout the course to support best practice, effective communication and professionalism. It helps students to apply theory and practice in both health and social care settings and offers a platform for employment in health or social care. It can also act as a springboard to a professional career in health and social care services. The course pulls together theory and practice for those who wish to work with people in a caring environment. The FdSc Applied Health and Social Care can equip students to work in health and social care settings at Assistant Practitioner level (band 4). There is the opportunity to progress on to our top-up degree in Health and Social Care at Newman University upon successful completion of this foundation Degree. As a graduate there are a number of opportunities for a career within the NHS, health promotion officer or practice manager for instance, also NHS graduate opportunities in leadership and management. Outside of the NHS there are many opportunities for a graduate in health and social care: project work; care manager; charity work, working with children, families, the elderly or people with special needs and mental health disorders. This also provides an opportunity for post graduate study and training. The duration of the full-time course is 2 years, with attendance one day a week. There is a requirement to work or volunteer in a health and social setting for one day a week for the duration of the course.

Qualification requirements
Entry requirements are flexible and recognize a range of academic qualifications, as well as work experience. Normally you will be required to possess a level 3 qualifications such as A level, a BTEC or NVQ level 3; to the value of 64 UCAS points. Applications from mature applicants may be considered in relation to prior experience. Applicants may be required to attend an interview and will be required obtain Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) at point of entry to the course.
