The foundation year entry provides an alternative route into degree-level study. It’s ideal for those who need to gain subject-specific knowledge and skills in order to progress with the full BSc qualification. You’re joining the rapidly growing animal sector at an exciting time. Almost 85 million households in the US have a pet – that’s increased from 56% to 68% over the past 30 years.* Your skills and expertise in animal training will be in high demand. Emerging science and technology allows us to understand animal performance like never before. Training methods place priority on the physical and psychological needs of an animal to maximise wellbeing and performance. You’ll learn from the latest advances in the field and use industry-standard technologies. Develop your expertise with access to our 70-species animal collection and benefit from our connections with animal trainers, scientists and behaviourists across the UK. All training is underpinned by the strictest ethics and supported by the latest scientific evidence. This programme has been formally recognised by the ABTC Programme Recognition Committee as delivering the academic elements necessary for an individual to achieve ABTC recognition as an Animal Trainer (AT) and Animal Training Instructor (ATI). To become ABTC registered a student will then to undertake an assessment via an ABTC Practitioner Organisations. *Forbes 2018

Our modules are developed regularly to reflect student and industry demands, ensuring you’re well prepared to enter skilled employment on graduation. The majority of courses are comprised of both compulsory and optional modules, the latter of which you'll be able to choose from to suit your interests and career goals. Most courses also include work placement learning, to help you gain essential experience for your future. Modules include: Foundation Skills Development, Academic Skills in Practice (internship), Reviewing Literature, Foundation Animal Studies, Foundation Biological Principles, Introduction to Animal Training and Performance, Animal Behaviour and Welfare, Professional and Academic Skills in Animal Biology, Systems Biology, Animals in Society, Animal Health and Disease, Animal Nutrition, Animal Structure and Motion, Principles of Assessing Animal Performance, Management and Training of the Animal, Research Methods for Agricultural and Animal Scientists, Dissertation, Advanced Animal Training, Advanced Animal Performance Analysis Modules are sometimes subject to change. Qualification requirements

In addition to the above Level 3 qualifications, a minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4), or equivalent, to include English Language and Mathematics are required. We welcome applications from mature students (aged 21 and over) and do not necessarily require the same academic qualifications as school leaving applicants. We may interview mature applicants and those with non-traditional qualifications. If you don't meet our tariff points requirement we will still consider your application and may be able to offer you a place on an alternative programme. Each application is considered on its own merits and we will consider combinations of the above mentioned qualifications or equivalent.
